Myanmar military declares ceasefire until April 22 to help quake survivors

By April 4, 2025

Myanmar (MNN) — Myanmar’s military declares a temporary truce in the country’s civil war to facilitate relief efforts as the death toll from the March 28 earthquake climbs above 3,000.

Military leaders say the ceasefire will last until April 22. Conflict between the army and ethnic resistance groups has plagued Myanmar for decades, complicated further by the 2021 coup.

“While these may be dangerous times, they’re unbelievably opportunistic times,” A3’s Joe Handley says.

“It’s our chance for the body of Christ to shine in these moments of chaos and show that real stability comes from Jesus.”

On March 28, 2025, at about 12:50 p.m. local time, a magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck near Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city with 1.2 million residents. Its shallow depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) led to strong shaking, felt as far away as Bangkok, Thailand.

While politics tie up international aid, local believers have a distinct advantage. Handley says, “We’re more connected right now in Myanmar, and that means we can be a conduit of help.”

Believers see Gospel opportunity in the confusion and overwhelming need that follow a disaster.

“They don’t dichotomize the Gospel and physical needs. They see it all working together,” Handley says.

“We help with food and supplies and shelter and rescue. At the same time, we demonstrate and proclaim the hope and truth of Jesus Christ.”

Find your place in the story. “Pray for our brothers and sisters in Christ on the front lines,” Handley requests. “They’re delivering aid right now as we speak.”

Pray for lasting peace in Myanmar, so aid may be delivered to those in need and recovery work may begin at the appropriate time.

“Finally, consider what God might have you do to help,” Handley says.

“Stand with us and give and help out through local channels of the churches there. This is a long-term investment that is Kingdom oriented.”

Give financial support through A3 to help local churches with practical needs like food, shelter, and rescue efforts.
