International (LWI/MNN) — What if we could give people access to clean water just by drinking it? That’s the idea behind the Living Water International H2O Project.

From March 5 to April 19–the period of Lent, Living Water staff is giving up all beverages except water. They’re keeping track of the money they would have spent on things like coffee, pop, or other drinks. Then, they’ll donate that amount to a project that brings clean water and the Gospel to people in need.

Living Water International exists to demonstrate the love of God by helping communities to acquire desperately-needed clean water and to experience “Living Water”–the Gospel of Jesus Christ–which alone satisfies the deepest thirst.

In 23 countries, Living Water has completed nearly 13,000 clean water projects. In each location, their teams assess the best way to improve water access and teach communities about sanitation and hygiene. Whenever possible, the ministry works alongside local churches to identify ways they can join what God is already doing, and to share the Good News about Jesus in simple ways–such as telling stories and asking questions.

Pray that more people will get involved in Living Water’s H2O project. While water is easily accessed in the West, it’s much harder to come by in the developing world.

According to the UN, 783 million people–11% of the world’s population–lack access to clean drinking water. Water-related diseases cause 2.2 million deaths a year. Every day, diarrhea takes the lives of 2,000 children in Africa–more than any other single cause of death.

Safe water, a toilet, and clean hands could prevent 90% of these deaths.
