Syria (MNN) — The United States is responsible for alleged human rights abuses in Syria, Amnesty International asserts. A recent report claims that because the U.S. set up camps for Islamic State detainees, it is responsible for thousands of people within the camps.
The camps are only one of Syria’s many woes.
Samuel* with Redemptive Stories says, “So many people have just closed their eyes to what’s taking place and the horrific realities [in Syria] because there are other more pressing needs [like] Gaza, Ukraine – things that are higher up on the headline list.”
Nearly 17 million people will need humanitarian aid to survive in 2024, up from 15.3 million last year.
“The whole country continues to subsist on the generosity of people outside the country,” Samuel says.
“Syria is a mess in and of itself; the economic situation only worsens. More issues create more difficulty for Christians to stay.”
Before war broke out in 2011, extreme poverty was virtually nonexistent in Syria. Today, over half of all Syrians live in extreme poverty, while 90 percent are below the poverty line.
“Many families are sending the young men to other countries where they can procure work and send money to help either the elderly or the young back in Syria,” Samuel says.
Ask the Lord to have mercy on Syria. Pray that people receive help for today and hope for tomorrow.
“The suffering of 20 million people in that space continues to motivate our hearts to ask God to intervene,” Samuel says.
Pray also “that we would see people experience healing and restoration in a right relationship with God as they become disciples of Jesus Christ. [Pray] that our brothers and sisters [in Syria] communicate the hope of Jesus with those around them.”
