Nepal (WRN) — [EDITOR’S NOTE: This is a press release from World Renew. For a list of our ministry partners working in Nepal, click here.]

World Renew is getting food, water, and cooking fuel to earthquake survivors in Nepal even as the death toll exceeded 5,000 souls Wednesday. It is the country’s worst disaster in 80 years. World Renew aims to raise $3,000,000 to help those in the most need in this tragedy.

“We grieve with those who have lost or are missing loved ones and those who were injured in this terrible disaster,” said Ken Kim, the agency’s Director of International Disaster Response. “World Renew is grateful for the generosity of our supporters in meeting the emergency needs of those who are suffering.”

World Renew is working with Christian churches in Nepal and international partners to provide water purification tablets, water filtration systems, emergency food, and cooking fuel to those most in need now–and making plans to help meet future needs as the recovery progresses.

Much of the support World Renew is providing is reaching communities near the epicenter of the quake where local Nepalese churches are accessing established networks to distribute the emergency supplies.

One congregation reported this week that their church building survived the quake, but nearly all of the 1,000 houses in their town were damaged. Another church reported that 3,000 homes in their community were completely wiped out. Many of these people have lost everything and are now sheltering in their church buildings. They are desperately in need of the water, food, and cooking fuel that World Renew is making available.

In addition to working through Nepalese churches, World Renew is providing a month of food assistance to students at the Evangelical Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Nepal who have no home to return to when classes were cancelled after the quake.

“These efforts are just the beginning,” Kim says. “As it is still the early stages after this terrible earthquake, World Renew is continuing to work on filling gaps as government and NGOs are mobilizing a national response.”

World Renew will plan to support partners with longer-term recovery efforts as additional responses are added in the days ahead. As a member of Integral Alliance, a coalition of 19 Christian disaster response and development organizations, World Renew began partnering a $6.7 million response to Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines in November 2013.

The Haiyan response has included emergency aid such as food and non-food items, generators, temporary shelter, hygiene kits, and trauma counseling in communities on three hard-hit islands, as well as cash-for-work projects and continuing programs in livelihood rehabilitation and home repair and reconstruction.

World Renew seeks to raise $3,000,000 for Nepal earthquake response and is accepting financial gifts to help meet immediate needs for food, water, and cooking fuel in the Nepal Earthquake and for longer-term recovery efforts in the future. Please give today.
