USA (MNN) — The world of college life and missions seem far from each other. Hinds Community College is bringing those worlds together through WordWinds International's Operation 22.
Every month, students in the Baptist Student Union at HCC are given a challenge. This month was focused on Bible translation and missions. "If they would be willing to sacrifice 22 dollars for this month, that 22 dollars that they'd be willing to give up would go to help translate a verse into a certain people group's language," said Gary Davison, director for BSU at HCC.
Twenty students took on the challenge, and some even pledged to donate enough to translate two or three verses.
The main goal of the translations is to connect with unreached people.
According to Davison, this kind of project is great for college students. While time is in short supply during the semester, they don't want to just sit back. "They want to be active in their faith, so we provide any opportunity we can give them to be on mission, whether its local stuff or doing spring break stuff or even providing them summer missions opportunities. We want to put that before them as much as we can. This is just one of the ways that can help students be on mission and be a part of what God is doing all over the world."
College students bring a specific attitude to missions, says Davison. "The great thing about college students is they have a lot of passion. They have a lot of energy, and with a
lot of college students, there's a sincerity and a genuineness there."
Next Tuesday ends the challenge for HCC students, but Davison is hoping that this experience has ignited a sense of urgency to share the Gospel wherever they go–not only on campus but around the world. "I really hope that it will broaden their view of what God is doing around the world," said Davison.
WordWinds' Operation 22 is helping Christians get the word out about the project. They are connected to Facebook and have buttons and cards that you can distribute.
