Lebanon (MNN) — Children of war-torn countries are often deprived of joy and a sense of stability. They have lost things most Americans take for granted, such as homes, provisions, belongings, and even family. Poverty and suffering have robbed them of their childhood, but now one Christian organization is working to restore just a piece of it.
Christian Aid Mission sponsors a week-long summer camp for Syrian refugee children who have been driven from their cities. The camp, put on by an organization called Cedar of Lebanon, is like any American Christian summer camp: it offers fun activities, new friendships, and most importantly the Gospel message.
“The kids hear messages of hope related to their daily life challenges–how God loves them, can protect them and can save them,” the native ministry leader said, according to an article by Christian Aid Mission. “They learn how to ask Jesus for forgiveness, and we see dozens and dozens who give their lives to the Lord each year.”
Every year, about 300 refugees attend the camp, which costs $100 for the week. Though it only provides a temporary relief from fear and suffering, the children do not easily forget the love they were shown.
“I will always remember your kindness,” one boy said to his leader, according to an article by Christian Aid Mission.
As of May 7, 2015, there are nearly four million Syrian refugees scattered throughout the surrounding countries, while 21.2% of them are between the ages of 5 and 11. In order to reach more of these children, Cedar of Lebanon is trying to expand its outreach. But this is no easy task; Cedar of Lebanon needs $15,000 to add these new camps, which will provide refugees with clothes, shoes, and other daily necessities.
Can you assist Cedar of Lebanon as it strives to provide hope and build new new disciples? Here are a few things you can do to make a difference:
- Pray that the refugees would realize the truth of the Gospel and that the seeds planted in their hearts would continue to grow.
- Pray that the Gospel would flourish in hostile areas like the Middle East.
