National Child Abuse Prevention Month and foster care go hand in hand

By April 3, 2008

USA (MNN) — Every day, four children die from child abuse. And every ten seconds, a new child abuse case is reported.

April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month, and Buckner International is helping get the word out. This month and throughout the year, they work to get kids out of difficult situations and into homes with more stable Christian foster families.

By living with a Christian family, children see Christ's love lived out daily. This could change their life forever. Buckner International is the largest faith-based, non-profit social service agency in the United States. Four-thousand children have been placed in permanent homes since they started their work in 1884. They help children in at-risk situations both in the U.S. and internationally.

In other countries, orphans are usually thrown out of orphanages at the age of 16. Being in an
orphanage most of their lives, they are not equipped educationally or vocationally.

Sometimes children are placed in foster care because their parents simply need time to get their lives together before they can take care of their children. In 78.4% of child
abuse cases, the parents are the perpetrators.
