How one high school in Uganda is lifting up its students and community

Uganda (MNN) — Here’s an update from East Africa about a growing Christian school that’s blessing its community.

In an interview done shortly before his death, Dave McIntyre with Set Free put it this way: “The Light Academy is finally lit up.”

That’s right — electricity! After a long, costly process, 600 students plus teachers at the Light Academy are on the grid. They aren’t the only ones, either.

“As part of this process, all [the] local communities got electric power for the first time in their history,” said McIntyre.

This gift of electricity is significant for more than one reason in this spiritually dark region. Back when the school was first being built, the local community said evil spirits wouldn’t allow this Christian school to stay. Those attitudes have slowly been changing as God has allowed the school to thrive.

Now every one of those communities that said the school would never be built has their own transformer, and they’re all being hooked up to the Ugandan electric grid at no cost to themselves, in a place that Uganda had largely abandoned,” McIntyre said.

“Everybody there is thrilled with the school now. The economic boost that it’s going to bring to that entire region is just phenomenal.”

With the addition of Light Academy in the past few years, McIntyre explained, Ugandan kids can now receive a discipleship-focused, Christian education from start to finish. They are introduced to the gospel of Christ and discipled by their teachers. They gain vocational skills and a vision for what their lives could be beyond the cycles of poverty many of their families have known for generations.

“It’s such a blessing to be able to disciple them from their young childhood all the way through till high school graduation, and see them go on to make their lives into something, and see what the Lord does with that whole trajectory,” McIntyre said.

Please, join in prayer for the Light Academy. It’s a hard though rewarding field to work in. Then, consider getting involved! Learn more here about how you can sponsor a child to receive a Christian education with Set Free for just $45 a month.
