USA (MNN) –In Midland, Texas, more single-parent families can soon overcome the negative effects of poverty and abuse.
Buckner International recently announced a $600,000 expansion of its Midland Family Place–a ministry which shows the
love of Christ to hurting families in Midland, Texas, helping
families become conquerors rather than victims.
"We've seen a need to expand Family Place ever since we
opened," said Buckner president Ken Hall. "We're confident the
Permian Basin community will join us to help fund this growth."
The construction of four new apartment units will make
more space available to single-parent families. Buckner Family Place helps
single parents and their children overcome the effects of domestic abuse,
poverty and violence.
"I don't even think I can begin to express my gratitude
for living at Family Place," says Robin Moore, the first resident at
Buckner Family Place in Midland. "The time I spent at Family Place was
life-changing for me."
In 2002, a divorced and pregnant Moore was forced to drop
out of Midland College. To support her two young sons and keep her life in
order, this was the only option.
"I was financially, spiritually and physically at the
very bottom," she recalls. "I couldn't get any lower."
Moore says that despite hardships, she's learned how to
conquer through Christ.
"The 'victim' persona is something I've tried to get away
from for a long time," she says.
With the help of the Buckner Family Place, Moore was able to
start anew. Now she works as the supervisor of Midland Hospital's mammography clinic.
Her sons, aged 13, 11 and 6, all attend school and participate in
extracurricular activities.
"The main thing I've had to learn–and it's so
important, is that God is your only provision. No man, no type of assistance is
going to satisfy you or fulfill you."
To help with the expansion project, an anonymous Midland
donor has already issued a $25,000 challenge gift. These funds are contingent
on Buckner matching the amount by December 31.
