A chance at selfless service

India (MNN) — Many people in the Western world cannot imagine being unable to access the Bible in their first language. It may be shocking to hear that Bible translation still remains a serious need, even in developed countries.

India is a highly-developed nation in many ways, and yet the Word of God has yet to be translated into the heart languages of over 50 million people living there. Although English and other main languages are widely spoken and understood in the nation, the first language of many is a dialect of the region in which they live. Over 300 people groups who speak some of these less-common languages have yet to receive the Bible in their own heart languages.

The translation of the Bible into these languages is vital to continuing effective outreach in India. Aware of this, Bible translators in India are working hard on 154 different Bible translations that will reach the more remote regions of the north.

Since the creation of Bible translations involves an immense amount of planning and strategy, the team will be attending a planning meeting in Goa, India from December 26, 2009 to January 5, 2010.

To be most effective and focused, translators with children need to be sure that their kids will be cared for. Wycliffe Associates is excited about the opportunity to serve these hardworking believers by watching after and ministering to their children during the eleven-day event.

Wycliffe Associates is currently looking for volunteers to be a part of their KidZone team over the Christmas holidays.

Due to the timing of the meeting, team members will need to fly out on Christmas day. This is certainly a large sacrifice for those who would normally spend the time with their families, but it is undoubtedly a significant way to provide truly selfless service to the body of Christ. Volunteers will be helping their spiritual siblings, who will in turn affect thousands more in India with the Word of God.

This is a wonderful opportunity for anyone to serve, especially college students. If you know anyone who would be interested, or if you would like to help, please send contact Wycliffe Associates via e-mail or phone. For contact information, click here.
