Bangladesh (MNN) — Almost a month after Cyclone Aila hit Bangladesh, another disaster is
unfolding: thousands remain without food, water and basic hygiene.
Oxfam reports that 350,000 victims are still living in
temporary shelter on embankments, roadsides, school buildings and cyclone
shelters. They also report that many of
the homeless had also lost their livelihoods and crops with shrimp farmers the
worst hit.
Aila is the biggest natural calamity to hit Bangladesh since
Cyclone Sidr hit the country in November 2007, leaving thousands of people dead
or missing.
Hundreds of children assistted by Compassion
International are affected. As of the last report, of the more than
14,500 children Compassion currently serves in Bangladesh, 522 are known
to have been affected by the storm. But this number could increase as more
information comes in from the country. Compassion serves more than 1 million
children around the world.
In response, Compassion Bangladesh is sending a medical team
to the most-affected areas to address health concerns. They had a great impact on the community,
as more than 650 people were treated.
