USA (MNN) — Reading through the entire Bible is a difficult feat for many in a year. Bible Pathway Ministries is doing it in under a week.
The Bible Reading Marathon will begin on May 3 and conclude on May 7, the American National Day of Prayer. In the United States, the marathon will take place in front of the U.S. Capitol building in Washington, D.C.
"At 6:00 in the evening (that's on a Sunday evening), we will begin reading in Genesis 1:1; and for 90-plus continuous hours, we will read through the entire Bible without comment or commentary, allowing God's Word to take preeminence," says Bible Pathway's Mike Hall.
2009 marks the 20th annual Bible Reading Marathon to take place in the United States. The Marathon does not generally draw magnanimous crowds, but Hall says hundreds of believers, including students, legislators and policemen, show up throughout the time to exercise their freedom.
"Very few nations have the freedoms that we Americans have in our First Amendment rights," says Hall. "That's what we celebrate: freedom of speech, freedom of assembly and freedom of religion. So to stand there and just read the Bible is an incredible celebration of freedom. "
Bible Pathway Ministries will use these freedoms to proclaim the Word of God and encourage people to look to it for guidance and wisdom.
Although many countries do not have the ability to read God's Word in front of their capitol buildings, several others participate. Multiple other marathons take place across the globe during these few days and at any other given time throughout the year.
