Tsunami victims are turning to Christ for answers

By April 15, 2005

India (MNN) — Life has not returned to normal. People are living under trees; food and running water are scarce. December’s tsunami damage is still a major problem and many have forgotten about it.

Gospel for Asia’s KP Yohannan says the crisis is nowhere near being over. “We now believe it will take at least two years or more for us to see any kind of full recovery and reconstruction (to) take place.”

Yohannan says Gospel for Asia is helping in multiple ways. “Our people are involved with counseling people from deep trauma and suicidal tendencies and giving them hope through Jesus. At the same time we are doing a lot more in terms of building up temporary shelters, taking children and putting them back in schools.” Gospel for Asia has a target of rebuilding 1,000 homes in the next 18 months.

However, there is good news in all of this, say Yohannan. “People who became the victims of the tsunami are finding hope in Jesus Christ. And, many, many testimonies, they’re saying, ‘Thank you for giving us food, shelter, housing, but finally we are able to find hope when you told us about Jesus.”

While the tsunami victims have been pleased with Christian help, Hindu radicals aren’t so thankful. Yohannan says, “People who live 100 km away from the affected areas are coming with the vehicles and weapons and beating up our missionaries, saying that “You are doing all this to convert people.’ The sad thing is the people who are attacking us are not the people who became the victims, nor are they doing anything to help the people.”

Your support is needed. $30 a month can help put a child through school, while your gift of $4,000 can help build a new home. Call 1-800-WIN-ASIA to help, or click on the link above to get connected with them.
