South Asia (MNN)–The Red Cross says the death toll from the tsunami disaster could top 100-thousand.
Operation Blessing President, Bill Horan says they have headquarters and staff in Hyderabad, India; Jakarta, Indonesia; Chiang Mai, Thailand; Manila, Philippines; and Singapore.
Their response was immediate. OBI chartered a private cargo aircraft in Jakarta, and sent a disaster response team to Aceh in Northern Sumatra. In addition, and in cooperation with Indonesian Air Force, a C-130 is being readied for a large OBI team of medical professionals and volunteers. The plane will also carry tons of medical and relief supplies.
Horan says, “We flew some relief supplies and medical equipment up to north Sumatra. We have a very large medical team in Indonesia, two medical mobilized from our Hyderabad office. In Thailand, we’ve got a medical team of 14 people going down to assist in a hospital.”
The teams arrived yesterday to begin their outreach. The OBI team to Nellore, India will assist victims made homeless by the Tsunami. The team will provide medical care and emergency rations. OB India also has a medical team mobilized to assist thousands of victims in Chennai.
Many have not had medical attention since the disaster struck. Horan says their teams are also trying to feed survivors. “We believe that by doing this relief ministry, we are truly demonstrating the love of God, and in a lot of the areas, as you know, that are hit hardest are pretty much non-Christian areas.”
