Elsewhere, Sunday’s Mexican election could see a change in political control after 70 years of dominance the ruling PRI party. Evangelicals are more active in this year’s campaign, but are divided over which candidate would be best for the country. Latin America Mission’s Ken MacHarg reports. “While some evangelicals see the leading opposition candidate Vicente Fox as a hope for breaking the PRI’s long-held dominance of Mexican politics, many evangelicals are fearful that his deep Catholic beliefs could spell trouble for protestant and other non-Catholic groups. Reforms instituted by the government in recent years have given evangelicals more freedom and evangelical interest in the elections far exceeds that of past years. However, the Mexico City newspaper Milenio says that the growing evangelical political activity is not strong enough to influence party policies or to make a significant difference in the elections.
