USA (MNN) — If you thought you could change the life of a child by just playing with them, hugging them, talking to them and telling them about Jesus, would you go half way around the world to do it? Maybe you've never thought about it, but would you think about it today?
Today is the deadline for Christians just like you to love kids in Jesus' name in Manali, India this summer.
Orphan Outreach is sponsoring this trip to help the House of Grace Children's Home and the Rainbow School. Amy Norton with Orphan Outreach says, "There are about 90 children of all ages there. Some are college age–going to college and still living at the orphanage. Then there is a Christian school and there are about 130 children going to this Christian school from the community."
Sadly, this trip is in danger of being cancelled, says Norton. "We need at least 10 people to make the team. We still need several more people to sign up. We have some folks who are repeating from last year, and some new people, and we'd love to have enough people to go."
The team will be holding vacation Bible school, teaching crafts, playing games, and spending time just loving the the kids. No experience is required to be a team member.
The House of Grace Children's Home and Rainbow School was founded in 1982 in Srinagar, Kashmir by Mawitei (called Auntie). In 1995, in order to escape the war in Kashmir, the home moved to the Manali area in the state of Himachal Pradesh. This home and school provide a unique Christian refuge in an area of India where less than 1% of the people are Christian.
Human trafficking is also an issue. This orphanage is giving graduates the tools they need to avoid these snares. "As they graduate, they leave the orphanage and go to jobs or opportunities all over India. In fact, some have gone back up to Kashmir, in areas where they are very anti-Christian (also a huge trafficking area), and [graduates] have an opportunity to make an impact."
