USA (MNN) — Thousands of people in the United States are beginning to flock to Florida as the world prepares for the Super Bowl, the National Football League spectacle event. The American football game will be seen around the world, featuring an outspoken Christian, Kurt Warner of the Arizona Cardinals.
However, there will be another battle raging behind the scenes this weekend. It's a battle for people's souls as Sports Fan Outreach will be walking the streets around the Super Bowl to talk about life's most important question, "Where will you spend eternity?"
Bill Adams with Sports Fan Outreach is heading up the evangelistic efforts in Tampa, Florida. He says 110 people will be joining him for weekend evangelism. "That's about eight teams of 13-14 people out in different areas of the city."
While the game is Sunday, festivities are taking place around the stadium leading up to the game, drawing thousands. "There will be 50,000 people down there Friday, Saturday and Sunday. There's going to be people walking everywhere. By the time we get to Sunday afternoon, I think we will have talked to tens of thousands of people."
Adams says this will be the largest number of people spending an entire weekend at his Super Bowl outreach event.
Sports Fan Outreach workers will be talking with people in public spaces, which allows for free speech — sharing the Gospel. But sometimes, Adams says, police officers take the law into their own hands. "Someone will get irritated just by the Gospel, and they'll go up and tell an officer. And in an effort to eliminate the problem, they eliminate us, which is obviously against the law."
Adams says that can cost them valuable evangelism time. "When you've lost a day, you've lost a chance to talk to 10,000 people."
Adams is asking you to pray that police officers won't take the law into their own hands. Pray also that God will soften the hearts of many whose lives will intersect with SFO volunteers this weekend.
