Sponsored children in Honduras now have opportunity for higher education and Christian training

Honduras (MNN) — Honduras is number 16 on the list of countries to offer Compassion International 's Leadership Development Program.

LDP is offered to college-age students who have successfully completed the Child Sponsorship Program. These students have shown leadership characteristics and an interest in
higher education. They are also students who, without a sponsor, would not be able to even consider furthering their education.

Not only do they take degree classes but take extensive Christian leadership training.

The LDP is dependent on sponsors from the United States who are willing to make a financial and relationship commitment until the student has completed their schooling.

Once the student has graduated they return to their home towns to put their degree to use.  The students who are selected for the program have a strong desire to help their own nation.  They are selected for the program on the basis of their Christian character, commitment to school and community and their academic performance.

Many students graduate with degrees in teaching, accounting, engineering, law or medicine.
Mike Hinckfoot, Compassion's Director of Leadership Development Program, has great hopes for God's plans in the Honduras program. Hinckfoot says, "He opened this program to
their country for a purpose. I know we will one day see these young people, with the help of their mentors and sponsors, rise above their circumstances becoming the men and women God had intended them to be."

Within the 15 other countries where the program is already established, 1,500 young adults are enrolled.

The competition for the program is fierce, and the deadline for admittance is in a month.  Those who are accepted will start classes in January or February next year, but sponsors
are required for it to even happen. The cost to sponsor a student for one year is $3,600.
