Nigeria (MNN) ― Believers working in Nigeria confirm there have been reports of rising sectarian violence in the north.
However, in the south, where the population of Christians is higher, the story isn't as grim. In fact, Worldwide Christian Schools' Dale Dieleman says, "These children in these secondary schools are learning the Bible. In fact, on the national exams, there is a Bible portion and yet none of these children have a Bible of their own to study from. The only Bible that is in the classroom is one the teacher has."
Dieleman says the teachers use the Bible as an educational tool as well. In many classes, the Bible is used not only for spiritual teaching, but as the textbook in many other subjects, like language arts, grammar, and spelling.
Worldwide decided to help meet the shortage of Bibles. "We have a goal of about six thousand dollars to put a Bible in the hands of every secondary level student, in six targeted secondary schools that we've been working with for a number of years in Nigeria, to buy a Bible there for like four or five U-S dollars. What is that? That's less than a McDonald's meal."
