Philippines (MNN) ― Typhoon Ketsana caused the Philippines' worst flooding in 40 years last weekend. The amount of rainfall in the first six hours was equivalent to one month's average. However, previously-formed disaster response teams were quick to take action.
Grace Weib, project manager with Christian Reform World Relief Committee, says their teams delivered food and other essentials to flood
victims. She credits the quick response to the teams' previous formation in
preparation for such an event. Churches
weren't scrambling to send a response team; they were already trained and ready
to act.
"Very quickly in the first two days, already 250 families received goods," said Wieb.
The typhoon's non-stop rain last Friday submerged thousands of homes and killed over 200. Many remain helpless as flood waters continue to impede rescue efforts.
"Pray for the people that they would survive because they haven't even been reached yet," Weib requests.
According to the CRWRC, millions of survivors are now at risk of typhoid and other water-borne illnesses as they wait for waters to recede. Despite this crisis, says Weib, Christ's love shines through the despair. "It's a good witness to the community of God's love to those that are in need."
Believers are asked to pray for the protection of severely-affected flood victims; pray also for rescue teams to reach those most in need.
CRWRC hopes to expand rescue efforts as more funding is made available. The most urgent needs are for blankets, food, used clothes and drinking water. You can help CRWRC meet these needs by clicking here to donate.
