USA (MNN) ― Crossroad Bible Institute's David Schuringa says they've just launched a new college-level course for inmates called "Christian Worldview I." This is "a course based on Chuck Colson's fantastic book 'How Now Shall We Live?' We received his permission to develop this course, and it's a course to expand the person in prison's horizon in terms of Christ being the Lord of all of life."
The course consists of 13 lessons that challenge students to create a biblical framework for all of life. Each lesson requires that students apply their faith in practical situations as they develop a Christian "worldview."
50 students will be selected to pilot the new courses before they are officially offered to all Center students. Schuringa asks prayer as they develop this program. "It will very much equip future leaders as they are released. They can become very well-equipped leaders behind bars and in the church behind the walls as well."
The classes are offered by The Center for Advanced Studies, the academic and research arm of Crossroad Bible Institute. They offer a college-level experience for people in prison, equipping them with the academic skills necessary to succeed in higher education upon their release.
Schuringa says they're also an investment into the inmate's future. "Research has proven that this method of re-entry education is enormously successful in reducing recidivism."
Students who have completed courses in CBI's Tier 1 and Tier 2 programs are eligible for further studies with the Center.
Although most CBI students study independently and correspond with a personal instructor, Schuringa says, "We're going to be having pilot program in our satellite campus in the Newton, Iowa correctional facility." In that program, students will study course material with an on-site professor.
Crossroad Bible Institute receives no funding from the federal or state government. All of its courses are entirely funded by scholarships from private donors and foundations. Click here if you can help, or if you'd like to become an instructor.
