China (MNN) ― As police surrounded Hua Huiqi's home in China on October 11, he was reportedly reading his Bible. Huiqi is a prominent Chinese house-church leader.

According to a Voice of the Martyrs contact, Huiqi was sent to the Beijing Tiantan Hospital when he  became unconscious after he was beaten repeatedly by police.

Huiqi is still in the hospital recovering from his injuries. On top of that, his 77 year-old mother, who has been imprisoned for two years and is very ill, is being held hostage by police who believe this tactic will cause Huiqi to release information about fellow believers.

China's Public Security Bureau recently put Huiqi under house arrest. Members of the PSB were in attendance when police surrounded his home.
